Seaside Dawn

Early dawn.
The light gently spreads
across the vast terrestial canopy above me,
turning the sky from inky blackness
to whispers of blue
illuminated with vibrant bursts of red and pink
as the sun begins its slow ascent at the far horizon.
I sit with my toes dug into the cool sand, a warming mug of coffee in my hands,
enjoying my front-row seat at nature's art show.
A wave crashes into the shore and sweeps toward my feet,
changing its mind at the last minute, receding to its powerful source.
It comes back a few seconds later with renewed energy as the tide is slowly coming in.
I know that in a few more minutes,
my chair will be awash in seawater, but I don't care.
This is the beach.
And I am at my leisure
with no schedules to keep
or tasks to occupy my mind.
My to-do list for today is short:
1.  Enjoy the beach.
Next week, its back to reality
with school and schedules and medical notes to transcribe,
and dishes and laundry and the thousand tasks a mom does.
But today I can sit and not have a care.
I throw back my head and laugh with exhilarating freedom
as the tide engulfs my chair and I am baptized in glorious seawater.
